The medical gauze market is undergoing a new transformation

21 Jul, 2025

Recently, with the continuous advancement of medical technology and the increasing demand for wound care among people, medical gauze, as a core product of traditional dressings, is experiencing a new wave of material innovation and process upgrading. Many domestic and foreign medical device enterprises have launched new types of gauze products such as antibacterial and degradable ones, aiming to enhance patients' post-treatment experience and reduce the risk of infection.

The pain points of traditional gauze have given rise to technological innovation

Medical gauze has long been the preferred dressing for treating wounds in clinical practice, but it still has problems such as adhesion to wounds, fiber residue, and pain during replacement. According to the "Global Wound Care Market Report", in 2023, approximately 15% of secondary trauma cases caused by insufficient dressing performance were related to regular gauze. For this reason, the research team began to explore solutions that integrate modern materials.

The new type of gauze products have many highlights

Antibacterial gauze: A certain medical technology company in the United States has recently launched gauze with a silver ion coating. Laboratory data shows that its inhibition rate against common pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus is up to 99%. Domestic enterprises have also developed antibacterial gauze loaded with traditional Chinese medicine ingredients (such as chitosan), which has passed clinical trials.

Absorbable gauze: A certain brand from Germany has made degradable gauze from regenerated cellulose fibers, which is suitable for filling internal wounds after surgery. It can naturally decompose in the body, reducing the pain of patients having it removed during a second operation.

Hydrocolloid gauze: Gauze combined with hydrogel technology can maintain a moist environment for wounds, accelerate healing, and is especially suitable for patients with burns and chronic ulcers.

Industry norms and market prospects

The National Medical Products Administration has recently updated the "Classification Guidelines for Medical Dressing Products", clearly including functional gauze in the supervision of Class II medical devices, and emphasizing that enterprises need to submit biocompatibility and clinical efficacy data. Industry insiders predict that the global medical gauze market size will exceed 5 billion US dollars in 2025, among which the Asia-Pacific region will become the main driver of growth due to the accelerated aging of the population.

Expert Opinion

The director of the trauma department of a tertiary hospital in Beijing pointed out: "The new type of gauze has obvious advantages in reducing the frequency of dressing changes and promoting the growth of granulation tissue, but the cost remains a challenge for its popularization." In the future, a balance needs to be struck between technological premiums and medical insurance coverage."

With increased investment in research and development and policy support, medical gauze, an "old product", is regaining new vitality, providing patients around the world with smarter and more humanized care options.
